The Eye and the Hand

You are not a spectator; you are a vital organ in the Body. You have a job to do. This week, ask a close Christian friend: "What spiritual gift do you see in me?" Sometimes others can see our function better than we can.

"Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms." () "If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be?"

() Imagine a human body that is nothing but one giant, blinking Eye. It can see everything perfectly. It can spot a fly a mile away. But it cannot walk. It cannot pick up a fork. It cannot hear music.

It is useless for anything except seeing. It is a freak of nature. For a body to work, it needs diversity. It needs hands, feet, ears, and lungs. The hand is not "better" than the foot; it just has a different job.

If the hand tries to walk, it will fail. If the foot tries to write a letter, it will look terrible. This is the church. God has given every single believer a Spiritual Gift . This is not just a natural talent (like being good at math or sports).

It is a supernatural empowerment given to you by the Holy Spirit the moment you are saved. He did not give you every gift. He intentionally left you lacking in some areas so that you would need other people.

Some people are Eyes (Prophecy/Discernment): They see truth clearly and warn of danger. Some people are Hands (Service/Helps): They love to set up chairs, cook meals, and fix things. Some people are Mouths (Teaching/Encouragement): They can explain the Bible or lift up the brokenhearted.

If you don't use your gift, the Body of Christ is handicapped. When you sit in the pew and do nothing, the church is limping. We are missing an arm or an eye because you are not functioning.

Digging Deeper

(Tap to expand) Theologically, the Greek word for spiritual gift is Charisma (plural: Charismata). Does that word look familiar? It comes from Charis, which means Grace. These are "Grace-Gifts." You do not earn them.

You cannot brag about them. Talent vs. Gift: Natural Talent: You get this when you are born physically (e.g., singing, IQ, athletic ability). Unbelievers have these too. Spiritual Gift: You get this when you are born again (e.

g., teaching, mercy, administration). It is empowered by the Spirit for the growth of the church. Note: God often uses your natural talent as a vehicle for your spiritual gift (e.g., a talented speaker using the gift of Evangelism), but they are not the same thing.

Common lists of gifts are found in Romans 12 , 1 Corinthians 12 , and Ephesians 4 . Reflect on this: What is something that comes naturally to you, but seems difficult for others? Do you love organizing details?

(Administration) Do you love welcoming strangers? (Hospitality) Do you love giving money to causes? (Giving) That "ease" is often a clue to your gift. 👣 Take a Step You are not a spectator; you are a vital organ in the Body.
