"And David shepherded them with integrity of heart; with skillful hands he led them." (Psalm 78:72) "People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." (1 Samuel 16:7)Imagine a massive iceberg floating in the North Atlantic.
From the deck of a ship, you see a majestic white mountain of ice. It looks huge. It glitters in the sun. This is the part everyone takes pictures of. This represents your Competence (your talent, your skills, your public success).
But science tells us that only 10% of an iceberg is visible above the water. The other 90%—the mass that actually gives the iceberg its stability and weight—is hidden deep underwater where no one can see it.
This represents your Character (your integrity, your private life, your motives). If the part under the water melts or breaks, the top part will flip over instantly. We have seen this happen to countless Christian leaders.
They were "Tall" (gifted speakers, great musicians, brilliant CEOs), but they were not "Deep." They focused 100% of their energy on polishing the tip of the iceberg (the show) and 0% on strengthening the base (the soul).
Eventually, the weight of their public platform became heavier than the strength of their private character. And they flipped. Leadership Formula: Competence + Character = Consistency. Competence without Character is a ticking time bomb.
You will eventually destroy the people you lead. Character without Competence is nice, but ineffective. You might be a good person, but you can't lead the ship. Both: Psalm 78 says David had "Integrity of Heart" (Character) AND "Skillful Hands" (Competence).
You need both, but the Character must always be bigger than the Talent.
Digging Deeper
(Tap to expand)Theologically, the word Integrity comes from the math term Integer . Integer: A whole number (1, 2, 75). It is not a fraction. It is not divided. Fraction: A broken number. A person with integrity is a "Whole Number."
They are the same person in the dark as they are in the light. They are the same person on Sunday morning in the pulpit as they are on Friday night on the internet. The opposite of Integrity is Hypocrisy (from the Greek word for "Actor").
An actor wears a mask. He plays a role on stage, but takes the mask off backstage.God is not impressed by the mask. He is inspecting the foundation. He knows that if your gift takes you where your character cannot keep you, you will be crushed.
Reflect on this:If we put a hidden camera in your living room or on your computer screen for 24 hours, would you be ashamed of what we saw?If your "Private Life" contradicts your "Public Life," your iceberg is unstable.
It is only a matter of time before it flips. 👣 Take a Step Stop trying to make your platform bigger; start making your foundation deeper. This week, do a "Character Audit." Ask your spouse or a best friend: "Where do you see a gap between what I say and how I live?"
(e.g., Are you patient at church but angry at home?). Don't defend yourself. Just listen. Fix the crack in the ice before it breaks.
