"Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, 'Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.'" (Mark 6:31)There is an old legend about the Apostle John.
One day, a hunter found John gently playing with a partridge bird in his hands. The hunter was shocked. He said, "You are a great spiritual leader. Why are you wasting time playing with a bird? Shouldn't you be praying or preaching?"
John pointed to the hunter’s bow and asked, "Why is your bowstring loose and hanging down? Why isn't it pulled tight?"The hunter laughed, "If I kept the bow strung tight all day long, it would lose its power.
The wood would warp. When I finally needed to shoot an arrow, it would have no snap. I have to unstring it so it can rest."John replied, "It is the same with the leader. If I am always 'on'—always preaching, always solving problems, always intense—my spirit will snap.
I must unstring the bow so I can be useful when the battle comes." This is the principle of Sabbath Rest .Many leaders wear their exhaustion like a badge of honor. We think, "I am tired because I am important.
The devil never takes a break, so neither should I."(Note: If you are imitating the devil's work ethic, you might end up with the devil's nature).Jesus was the busiest Man in history. He had only three years to save the world.
Yet, He constantly withdrew to "lonely places" to pray and sleep. He knew that you cannot give what you do not have . If your tank is empty, you are not driving; you are just rolling downhill, and eventually, you will crash.
Digging Deeper
(Tap to expand)Theologically, the Sabbath is the only one of the Ten Commandments that modern Christians brag about breaking. We would never say, "I killed someone yesterday!" but we proudly say, "I worked 80 hours this week and haven't had a day off in months!"
Why is Sabbath a Commandment? It is not just a rule; it is a Declaration of Trust. When you take a full day off (24 hours) and do no work: You declare that you are not God. The world will keep spinning without you.
Your email inbox will survive without you. You declare that God is the Provider. You trust that He can do more with your 6 days of work than you can do with 7. Rest vs. Numbing:Be careful. "Numbing" is not Rest.
Numbing: Scrolling social media, binge-watching TV, overeating. This distracts you, but it doesn't recharge you. Rest: Silence, nature, reading, laughter, good food, sleep. This restores your soul. Reflect on this:The "Elijah Complex" (1 Kings 19).
The great prophet Elijah became suicidal and asked God to kill him. Was he a heretic? No. He was just exhausted.God didn't give him a theology lecture; He gave him a nap and a snack. Are you spiritually depressed, or do you just need a nap?
👣 Take a Step You cannot redline the engine forever. Look at your calendar for the next 7 days. Mark out one 24-hour block (or at least a half-day block) as "UNTOUCHABLE." Turn off your phone. Do not check email.
Do something that makes your soul happy. Unstring the bow.
