"If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw... the fire will test the quality of each person’s work. If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward."
(1 Corinthians 3:12-14) "For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ..." (2 Corinthians 5:10) Imagine two construction sites side-by-side. Builder A builds a massive mansion. He works fast.
He uses cheap materials—plywood, cardboard, and dry grass (hay). It looks impressive and huge from the outside. People walk by and say, "Wow, look how successful he is!" Builder B builds a small, sturdy cottage.
He works slowly. He uses solid marble, granite, and gold. It looks modest. People walk by and say, "Is that all you have done?" Then, the Inspector arrives. He doesn't bring a tape measure; he brings a Flamethrower.
He sets both houses on fire. Builder A’s massive mansion burns to ash in seconds. Nothing is left. Builder B’s small cottage stands firm. The fire actually makes the gold shine brighter. This is the Judgment Seat of Christ (The Bema Seat).
This is not a judgment for punishment (that was taken by Jesus on the Cross). You cannot lose your salvation here. This is a judgment for rewards. God is going to test how you lived your Christian life.
Wood, Hay, Straw: Things done for man's applause, selfish ambition, or half-hearted effort. They are temporary. They burn up. You are "saved, but only as one escaping through the flames" (1 Cor 3:15).
Gold, Silver, Stones: Things done for God's glory, acts of secret kindness, discipleship, and faithfulness. They survive. The Lesson: You can be a "Saved Failure." You can get into Heaven but arrive with nothing to show for your life.
Do not spend your life climbing a ladder only to find out it was leaning against the wrong wall.
Digging Deeper
2 (Tap to expand)3 Theologically, we must distinguish between two j 4 udgments: The Great White Throne (Rev 20): For unbelievers. The question is Sin . Result: Eternal separation or life. The Bema Seat (2 Cor 5): For believers.
The question is Service . Result: Rewards or loss of rewards. What are the Rewards? The Bible speaks of Crowns given to believers: The Victor’s Crown (1 Cor 9): For those who discipline themselves. The Crown of Rejoicing (1 Thess 2): For those who win souls/disciple others.
The Crown of Righteousness (2 Tim 4): For those who long for His return. The Crown of Life (James 1): For those who endure suffering. The Crown of Glory (1 Peter 5): For pastors/leaders. What do we do with them?
We don't put them in a trophy case to brag. In Revelation 4:10, the elders cast their crowns before the throne. We want rewards not for our own ego, but so we have something of value to throw at the feet of Jesus to say, "Thank You.
You did this through me." It would be a tragedy to arrive at His feet empty-handed. Reflect on this: Look at your calendar from last week. How much of your time was spent on "Wood, Hay, and Straw" (things that will not matter in 100 years)?
How much was spent on "Gold" (people, prayer, the Word, acts of love)? Efficiency is getting things done fast. Effectiveness is getting the right things done. Are you efficient or effective? 👣 Take a Step Build with gold today.
Action: Do something "inefficient" but eternal. Spend 20 minutes listening to a child or an elderly person. Write an encouraging letter to someone who can do nothing for you. Give money anonymously. These things look small to the world, but they are fireproof.
