"But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him." (Luke 15:20) In Middle Eastern culture of the first century, older men did not Run .
It was undignified. To run, they had to hike up their robes and show their bare legs. It was shameful. But in the story of the Prodigal Son, the Father Runs . Why? Because the son had disgraced the village.
If the neighbors saw him first, they might mock him or stone him. The Father ran to get to the son before the shame could reach him. He took the shame of running to cover the shame of the son. This is the heart of God toward you.
When you repent, God doesn't sit on a throne with arms crossed, waiting for you to crawl back and explain yourself. He sees you turning. He leaps off the throne. He runs. He isn't disgusted by your mud; He is desperate for your return.
The only thing that keeps you in the pigpen is the lie that the Father is angry.
Digging Deeper
Theologically, this is Propitiation . The Father absorbs the cost. Notice the son had a prepared speech: "Make me a hired servant." The Father interrupted the speech. He didn't let him finish. He called for the Robe (Righteousness), the Ring (Authority), and the Sandals (Sonship).
Repentance is not groveling; it is coming home to a party. Reflect on this: Have you drifted from God? Are you preparing a speech? "God, I promise I'll do better..." Forget the speech. Just turn toward home.
He is already running. 👣 Take a Step Action: The Return. If there is a sin you are hiding, bring it to the light today. Visualize the Father running toward you, not away from you. Pray: "Dad, I'm home."
