The Branch and the Sap

Apples don't grow because the branch tries hard; they grow because the branch holds on. Stop striving. Start abiding.

"I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing." () Imagine a branch on an apple tree. Does the branch "try" to make apples?

Does it grunt and strain and turn red in the face? "I must... make... an apple!" No. If a branch is straining, something is wrong. The branch has only one job: Connection. If the branch stays connected to the trunk, the sap flows naturally.

The life of the tree flows into the branch, and apples appear as a byproduct. The branch does not produce the fruit; the branch bears the fruit. This is the secret of Abiding . Many leaders burn out because they are trying to "produce" fruit (ministry success, converts, patience) by their own effort.

That is not abiding; that is striving. Jesus says, "Apart from me you can do nothing." He doesn't mean you can't do activities (you can preach, sing, and organize without Him). He means you can't do anything of eternal value .

It’s all plastic fruit. The Shift: Stop focusing on the Fruit (Output). Start focusing on the Connection (Input).

Digging Deeper

Theologically, the Greek word for "Remain" or "Abide" is Meno . It means to stay, to dwell, to make your home in. It is a continuous, moment-by-moment awareness of God's presence. Practicing the Presence: Brother Lawrence, a 17th-century monk who worked in a kitchen washing dishes, learned this secret.

He didn't divide his life into "Prayer Time" and "Work Time." He turned his work into prayer. "Lord of all pots and pans and things... make me a saint by getting meals and washing up the plates." Abiding means chatting with Jesus while you drive, while you code, while you change diapers.

Reflect on this: Check your sap flow. Do you feel dry, brittle, and easily snapped (irritated)? That means the sap isn't flowing. You have disconnected. You might still be "working for the tree" (doing church work), but you aren't "connected to the vine" (intimacy with Christ).

👣 Take a Step Action: The 60-Second Reconnection. Set an alarm for 12:00 PM and 6:00 PM. When it rings, stop whatever you are doing for exactly 60 seconds. Take a deep breath. Say: "Lord, I am just a branch.

You are the Vine. Flow through me." Re-center your soul.
