The Refiner’s Reflection

If you are going through the fire right now, don't panic. God isn't trying to burn you; He's trying to see His reflection in you. Your hardest season might be your holiest season.

"In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold...

may result in praise." () Imagine a person making pure gold. They hold a pot of raw gold over a very hot fire. Why? Because raw gold is mixed with dirt and junk. As the fire gets hotter, the gold melts.

The dirt separates and floats to the top. The goldsmith carefully scoops it off. He puts it back in the fire. He scoops again. How does he know when the gold is perfectly pure? He knows it is ready when he can look into the melted gold and clearly see his own face , like a mirror.

This is how we must understand Suffering . When your life gets "hot"—when stress rises, when you lose a job, when a bad doctor's report comes—it is not because God hates you. It is because He is refining you.

The heat forces your hidden junk to the surface. When life was easy, you didn't know you were impatient. In the fire, your anger floats to the top. When you had money, you didn't know you were greedy.

In poverty, your greed floats to the top. God uses the heat to scoop away the dirt, until He can see the face of Jesus reflected in your character.

Digging Deeper

There is a big difference between Punishment and Discipline . Punishment is from a Judge. It looks backward at your crime. Its goal is to make you pay. (Jesus already took all your punishment on the Cross).

Discipline is from a Father. It looks forward to your future. Its goal is to make you mature. Hebrews 12 tells us that God disciplines those He loves. If your life is perfectly easy, you might just be staying a child forever.

If your life is hard, be encouraged. The Father is treating you as a son or daughter worth training. Reflect on this: What "dirt" has floated to the surface of your life recently because of stress? Anxiety?

Anger? Self-pity? Don't try to hide it. Ask God to scoop it away. 👣 Take a Step Action: The Prayer of Acceptance. Today, don't just pray for your problem to go away. Pray this instead: "Lord, don't lower the heat until the work is done.

Don't let me out of this fire until I look like You."
