"You, however, must teach what is appropriate to sound doctrine." (Titus 2:1) Imagine two animals: A Jellyfish and a Tiger . A Jellyfish is soft. It has no bones. It just floats with the ocean current.
If you poke it, it wobbles. It cannot stand up on its own. A Tiger has a rigid, strong skeleton. Because of those hard bones, it has powerful muscles. It can run, jump, and stand firm. Many people today want a "Jellyfish Faith."
They say, "I don't need theology or deep Bible teaching; I just need to love Jesus and love people." That sounds nice, but it is actually very dangerous. Without Truth (The Skeleton), your love has no structure.
Who is the Jesus you love? Is He the Creator, or just a good teacher? What does love actually mean? Is it agreeing with everyone, or is it telling them the truth? If you don't have the "hard bones" of solid biblical teaching, your faith will collapse as soon as culture pushes against you.
Truth is not the enemy of Love. The skeleton is what allows the body to stand up and move. The deeper your understanding of truth, the stronger your love will be.
Digging Deeper
The word Doctrine just means "Teaching." Every single person has a doctrine. An atheist has a doctrine ("God isn't real"). The culture has a doctrine ("Do whatever makes you happy"). The question is not if you have a doctrine, but if your doctrine is Sound (Healthy) or False (Sick).
Paul tells Titus to teach healthy truth because bad theology actually hurts people. (For example, if you believe God promises you will always be rich, your faith will shatter the day you lose your job).
Reflect on this: Do you find deep Bible study "boring"? Try seeing it as building your "Structure." You can't give someone a strong hug if you don't have bones in your arms. You can't truly love your neighbor if you don't know the truth of God's Word.
