devotionZechariah 4:6THE BURNING HEART

The Wick

Burnout happens when you try to be the fuel instead of just the wick. If you burn your own energy, you'll just make smoke. Soak in the Spirit and you'll burn bright without burning out.

"Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,' says the Lord Almighty." () Imagine an ancient oil lamp. It has two parts: The Wick (a piece of cotton string) and the Oil . The Wick’s job is to hold the flame.

But the Wick is not the fuel. The Oil is the fuel. If the Wick is soaked in Oil, it burns bright and clean for hours. The string itself barely burns. But... if the Wick is Dry (no oil), what happens?

It burns itself . It creates a nasty black smoke. It smells terrible. And it burns out in seconds. Burnout is what happens when you try to do God's work without God's power. You are a Dry Wick. You are burning your own energy, your own emotions, and your own talent.

You get irritable (Smoke). You get exhausted (Ash). You want to quit. God never intended for you to be the fuel. You are just the Wick. Your only job is to stay soaked in the Spirit. As long as you are soaked, you can burn forever without burning out.

Digging Deeper

Theologically, this distinguishes between Striving and Abiding . Striving is me working for God. Abiding is God working through me. In the Tabernacle, the priests had to keep the lamps full of oil ().

If you feel "crispy" today—fried, tired, cynical—it is because the oil level is low. You are burning your own rope. Stop working. Go get Oil (Prayer, Worship, Rest). Reflect on this: Are you burning bright or just making smoke?

When people are around you, do they smell the sweet aroma of Christ, or the acrid smell of a stressed-out, burnt-out Christian? Soak the wick. 👣 Take a Step Action: The Pit Stop. If you feel tired, do not add more to your To-Do list.

Cancel one appointment today. Use that hour to do absolutely nothing but listen to worship music. Pray: "Lord, I am dry. Soak me again. I refuse to burn my own rope."
